The Fertile Crescent and Mesopotamia

The Fertile Crescent is an area of land by the Mediterranean Sea that includes parts of West Asia-Middle East (Iraq) and East Africa (Egypt).  Some of the first-known civilizations started in that area.  Two rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates, were important to the civilizations. The land between these rivers was called Mesopotamia, which means "land between two rivers."  Three important empires began in between these rivers: Assyrian, Babylonian, and Sumerian.  Use the links below to learn more about Mesopotamia.

Ancient Egypt

The ancient Egyptians started living near the Nile River while the settlements in the Fertile Crescent were beginning.  The two kingdoms were united under Menes in 3150 B.C. and Ancient Egypt began.  The Nile River provided the water, plants, and animals for food that the Egyptians needed to survive.  Visit these sites for more information.
